The Amalfi coast

Overview

The Amalfi Coast

There is hardly any other stretch of coastline that is so beloved by the whole world! La Costiera Amalfitana has inspired creative minds from landscape painter JMW Turner to Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and allured pleasure seekers from Jackie Kennedy to Poppy Delevingne. Leave the driving to your expert guide, who is proud to call this area his home, and follow in their fancy footsteps! After leaving Naples and skirting the edge of Vesuvius, we arrive on the beguiling peninsula of Sorrento, which stretches out into the Gulf of Naples as if trying to kiss the Isle of Capri. Known as the Land of Colors, Sorrento will thrill you with its artisans and limoncello, its legendary hospitality and cultural highlights, like the Correale di Terranova museum. South of Sorrento we continue along the Amalfi Drive – a feat of engineering with improbable roads and tunnels linking the two other seaside villages we’ll visit today. Positano, known as the “vertical village”, climbs the cliffs beside the azure Tyrrhenian Sea and contains a warren of uneven stairs, quaint shops and inviting bars and restaurants with some of the best people-watching in Italy. And Ravello, perched on a rocky spur between two valleys, is not as well-known as other Amalfi destinations, although it is probably the most elegant: revel in its never-ending views, marvel at its ancient cathedral and noble palaces, and indulge in its artisanal ceramics, luxe linens and delectable delicacies before heading back to your hotel or cruise.
